As a member of the Salt Lake County Council of Governments, we would ask for your time and consideration regarding the prioritization of the transportation projects using the Proposition 3 tax revenue.

Specifically we would like to address the Draper Trax project.

Recently over 1750 Draper residents signed a referendum petition challenging the decision by the Draper City Council to approve UTA's recommended alignment along the railway route.

The position of these residents, as well as many others from the surrounding area is as follows:

  1. We want improved mass transit options that make sense, are cost effective, and would have the greatest impact on congestion.
  2. We are opposed to the proposed Trax alignment along the railway route.
  3. We are in favor of the alternative State Street route that was presented by UTA. We would also be in favor of further study of a route that would connect Trax with Front Runner at either 100th south or 114th south where Front Runner could then have stops in the Draper / Bluffdale area to serve the south end of the valley as it heads into Utah County or the Ogden area.
  4. The existing railway route IS NOT the most effective mass transit option or alignment .

The State Street route makes more sense and is a more logical choice for the following reasons:

  1. According to UTA's estimated costs, the State Street route will not cost more than the railway route when construction and yearly maintenance costs are considered.
  2. The State Street route would allow easier access for residents from the cities of Bluffdale, Riverton, and South Jordan (i.e. more usage).
  3. The State Street route will bring commuters to the commercial center which is along the current transportation corridor (I-15), not in the heart of Draper.
  4. The State Street route would be easier to tie in with Front Runner from Utah County .

The petition mentioned above is strong evidence that residents want mass transit that is cost effective, make sense, and preserves residential areas and streets.

In summary, we ask that you reconsider the prioritization of the transportation projects and lower the priority of the Draper Trax line. Until UTA is instructed to further study the State Street route, or study other alternatives, our tax dollars should be spent elsewhere.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Draper Citizens for Responsible Transportation (CRT)
